The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — 5 Tips for Fast Progression

Even though Skyrim is many years old, new players are constantly discovering it. If you want to make sure your battles against dragons aren’t too difficult, follow these tips for fast and effective character progression.

1. Use the„Guardian Stones“

Right at the start of the game, on the road to Riverwood, you will encounter three stones. Choose the one that best fits your playstyle:

  • The Warrior Stone: Combat skills (one-handed, block, etc.) increase 20% faster.
  • The Mage Stone: Magic skills increase 20% faster.
  • The Thief Stone: Stealth skills (sneaking, lockpicking, etc.) increase 20% faster.
2. Alchemy, Smithing and Enchanting (The Golden Triangle)

These three skills make your character practically invincible.

  1. Craft potions (Alchemy).
  2. Sell them and buy iron ore/ingots.
  3. Forge daggers (Smithing).
  4. Imbue them with magical power (Enchanting).
3. Don’t Forget Companions

Lydia (whom you receive after completing Whiterun’s main quest line) will be incredibly useful early on. Not only will she help you in battle, but she can also carry your heavy items that you plan on selling later.

4. Utilize the “Rested” Bonus

Many players forget that sleeping in Skyrim provides practical benefits. If you sleep in your own home or at an inn, you will receive the “Well Rested” status.

  • Effect: All skills develop 10% faster for the next 8 in-game hours.
  • Tip: If you are married and sleep in the same house as your spouse, the bonus increases to 15% (Lover’s Comfort). Always get some sleep before starting a difficult mission or crafting items.
5. Fully Learn “Unrelenting Force” (Fus Ro Dah)

This is the game’s most iconic Shout, but many players only use the first two words.

How to upgrade it: Visit the Greybeards at High Hrothgar as soon as possible. After learning the third word, you will be able to blast even the strongest enemies off cliffs or knock them down for an extended period, making combat significantly easier.
